AUTO INSURANCE

WHY YOU NEED AUTO INSURANCE

Having car insurance sometimes feels like a waste of money – until you need it. Auto insurance helps cover the cost of damage to your car or the cost of damage done by your car. It can help cover medical expenses for people inside the car at the time of an accident, damage caused to someone else’s property by your car, or even general maintenance your car may need.

In most states, you are legally required to have a certain amount of car insurance, though these guidelines vary by state. Local insurance agents can help you determine what your state’s minimums are.

WHAT AUTO INSURANCE COVERS

Different parts of your car insurance policy will cover different costs.

  • Collision insurance contributes to the cost of damage to your vehicle after an accident.
  • Comprehensive insurance protects you from the cost of damage that happens to your car when it isn’t being driven, like vandalism or bad weather.
  • Gap insurance, in the event of an accident, helps cover the difference between what your vehicle is worth and what you still owe on the loan or lease.
  • Auto liability coverage covers the cost of any property damage or injury that you cause with your car.
  • Personal injury protection, or no-fault insurance, helps cover medical costs and loss of income for the driver and passengers in your vehicle in the event of an accident.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage helps cover the cost of an accident if the other driver’s insurance can’t or won’t pay for all the damages.

HOW TO GET AUTO INSURANCE

Every car insurance company will require you to fill out an application including information about the drivers and vehicles you’ll be insuring. Most companies now have a way to apply for car insurance online. For the drivers, you’ll need information like dates of birth, drivers’ license numbers, and addresses. You will need to know the make, the model year, and the Vehicle Information Number. The application may also ask other questions to help determine the cost of your insurance.

After you submit your application the insurance company will reach out to you with a quote. How long you have to wait for a quote, will depend on the company and how you submitted your application. If you submit your application for car insurance online, you may even get an instant car insurance quote. Many car insurance companies have online tools that use questions about you and your car to give you a quick car insurance quote.

You can then compare the quotes you receive and what kind of coverage you will get for that price. Generally, cheaper auto insurance will cover you for less, so what kind of coverage you chose will depend on how much coverage you need and what you can afford. Once you decide, reach back out to the insurance company you’ve decided on, and they’ll guide you through the rest of their process.
