WHAT DO YOU NEED FROM YOUR CAR ?
How big do you need your car to be? If you have a family or if you regularly transport equipment, you probably need a larger car like a minivan or an SUV. On the other hand, if you just need to commute to and from work and run the occasional errand, you might just want a smaller car like a sedan.
Do you want a gas-powered, electric, or hybrid car? Electric and hybrid cars are increasingly popular because of their eco-friendliness, and they have become more affordable thanks to advancements in technology. Electric cars mean you don’t have to pay for gas, but electric car batteries can’t go as far as a tank of gas and public charging stations aren’t widespread yet. Consider a gas-powered car’s gas milage too, especially if you drive a lot.
What extra features do you want? Heated seats and steering wheels can be convenient if you’re in an area with harsh winters. Rearview cameras or a self-parking car can make parking easier. Make a list of the features you want, but make note of the ones you’d be willing to compromise on in order to stick to our budget.
WHAT CARS SUIT YOUR NEEDS ?
It’s easiest to determine what type of car you need first, like a sedan, SUV, crossover, minivan, van, or truck. From there you can look into different models of cars within that category. You can narrow down that search by sticking to a particular brand, but keeping your search broad may allow you to find a car that better suits your needs.
Look at the features listed by the manufacturer and the dealership and make note of which features come standard and which ones cost extra. Read online reviews and talk to people you know who own that kind of car to find out what people who drive the car think.
WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET ?
Take the time to consider how much you can afford to pay for a car. It’s a smart idea to budget for a large down payment so that you have a smaller loan to pay off later. Consider how much you can spend on your monthly payments, too. Some experts recommend about 10% of your monthly income, but you should take your own income and monthly spending into account when setting a budget.
Look around online to see how much cars that you like tend to sell for so you know what to expect when you go to buy a car. If the average price you see online is outside of your budget, consider looking at a different model, getting a used car, or compromising on some of the features you want.
